The best time of year to use voucher codes

When UK retailers are most likely to publish codes worth using, from payday to the January sales.

Codes follow the retail calendar. Payday weekends, bank holidays and the back-to-school period are reliable windows, because shops compete for a basket you were already planning to spend.

Black Friday week is noisy. Many “up to 70% off” claims refer to a handful of lines, while the voucher code covers a smaller cut on everything else. Decide the product first, then test the code. A sale price with no code is often better than a code on the full price.

January is stronger for fashion and home. Retailers clear winter stock and publish simple percentage codes to move what is left. Electricals are less predictable, because the deepest cuts are often instant markdowns rather than codes.

Spring bank holidays suit travel. Package operators release fixed-amount codes on selected departures. The headline saving is per booking, so a family of four should divide it before comparing it with another operator.

If you only check one habit, make it this: sign up for the retailer’s own list as well as ours. First-order and member codes are issued there, and they are the ones most likely to clear the exclusions.
